About Mokum
“Mokum” is the old, affectionate nickname for Amsterdam. It is what locals call the city when they mean the city they belong to, not the one on the postcards. That is the guide we wanted and could never find, so we made it.
Every guide to Amsterdam seemed to be written for someone passing through: the same ten sights, the same crowded streets, the same advice you could have guessed. Meanwhile the actual city, the one with the quiet courtyard behind the plain door and the brewery under the windmill, stayed invisible unless a friend happened to take you there.
Mokum is that friend, at scale. We keep a handpicked guide to the cafes, restaurants, bars, parks, markets, and culture worth your time, organized by neighborhood and kept deliberately small. Members save the spots they love to a private map and get a short weekly read on what is on across the city.
We make money one way: memberships. No advertising, no sponsored spots, no deals with venues. It is the only way a guide stays honest, and honesty is the entire product.
No paid listings, no affiliate links, no advertising. Membership pays for the guide, which means the guide answers to you and to no one else.
Amsterdam is a set of villages. We cover it neighborhood by neighborhood, so you always know where you are going and what kind of evening it will be.
This is not a list of sights to tick off. It is the cafe you will return to, the market for a Saturday, the brown bar that feels like yours by the third visit.
A small list, kept honest. If a place slips, it comes out. We would rather send you to forty spots we love than four thousand we have not checked.
Start free, browse every neighborhood, and become a Local when you are ready for the whole thing.
